Batik History

Batik is a Javanese word that comes from the "Ba" or "mba" which is a common prefix in the Java language which means it will perform, while the word "tik" means the point so batik means to make a point. Batik itself basically consists of two basic strokes of dots and lines, from two basic strokes are born motif that varies with the time development, social background, culture, economics and geography. Indonesian Batik is known since centuries ten has even reached eastern Asia, Suriname and Europe. Batik has its own history, because batik can not be separated from human life. Batik is the most widely known are the Javanese batik. Producing areas in Indonesia is the biggest batik of Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Pekalongan, Cirebon, lasem and Tuban. There are also areas that have characteristics in motif but not so widely known as batik Tegal, Kudus, Semarang, Kebumen and Tasik Malaya (Boutique Batik Tasik).

Batik motifs each region has its own differences. In addition to having the beauty of these motifs have meaning, message, and hope. Ancient batik is also a symbol of feudalism Java because of the differences and batik motive for the king and his family, ordinary people, farmers, fishermen, etc..

Batik on today have evolved from time to time and experience acculturation, both from the region with one another and with other countries. Previously only known batik, however, we now know batik cap, batik weaving, and mixed (combination).
